So, want to make sure I get the hang of the type of trading that takes place in this league.
Halfman bought Goldy for $36, then traded him to Dem Bums, absorbing $33.50 of the auction price. He trades him for Tex, essentially straight up (the $2.50 left over on Goldy's auction price versus the auction price of Tex, which was $2.50).
So Bums gets Goldy for $2.50, plus picks up a draft pick on top of it???
Did I get this right and why in the world would Halfman do this? I'm sure there's logic, but in my dimwitted state, I don't see it.
Thanks

Goldschmidts salary is still 36, but halfman covers 33.5 this season, if bums gives him more than one year, bums will pay 36

Halfman covers salary difference this year. Probably understanding that giving majority of his salary to 3 players is a bad idea. He takes the hit this year, he has to because no one can take on that cap hit.

Trades like this will happen here, on face value goldy for tex is insane but given the contracts it will help halfman with the cap going forward. Plus he upgrades his pick.

Yeah, I get the salary dump, but why not just give him a one year contract, since he's still committed to the $36 for a 1b? And, he gives up a draft pick as well?

Ah, well, I missed the draft pick coming back to him, so understand now that he at least got something for this.

And Halfman, not trying to pick on you. As a newbie, just trying to get a feel for the league and trades. Also, trying to make sure I don't get hosed as I'm sure some of the veterans will do their best to clean my pockets!

KAW, think of it this way.
Tex was traded for the 94th pick of the draft, fair enough. The 46th pick of the draft was traded for the use of Goldy for 1 year because no one's gonna give him multi years at that price (they shouldn't anyway), the 46th pick of the draft will come with over 5 years of team control at very little cost a year. So say 5 years of a good prospect at a max of $5mil a year for 1 year of Goldy.
It's a good deal for Bums but it does impact his building and for Halfman he got a chance to get a long term piece after being very aggressive early in the drafting.
Like Stones said these types of trades and many other wild trade options are common in this type of league....it's the Wild Wild West!

I get what your saying kaw, I think halfman could have gotten better than tex. But could he have upgraded for a better draft pick? Not sure on that. Tough to unload big heavy contracts like that here. Best teams in this format manage their cap extremely well and get max value per dollar basis.

If I can add one thought to the string... if you have a player you generally just want to trade (or are looking to add) simple post it on the Trade Talk to see what offers you can get from multiple people. Not necessarily to pit them against each other in a bidding war rather you may be surprised that someone else is thinking of moving a player and the trade is a good fit, or it works for their salary cap, or fits their longer term plan. In a league like this there are different strategies in play on most every team (short term, long term, salary cap adjustments, hitting versus pitching, missing categories, prospects vs MLB players).
In my case I have a 2bman I no longer need, Doc had a SS (Russell) he wanted to move for pitching, 1/2man had a contract he wanted to move, Bashers is looking for 2016 $$, Bums wants a SS - all good Trade Talk posts. I know I personally have reached out to 2 of the 3 these when I probably would not have engaged otherwise. I know own Russell when I never would have known Doc was even looking to move him.
Nothing wrong with reaching our directly if you are looking for something specific or you know someone else needs something, but use the tools where you can. Keeps the trade talk flowing, activity levels up, conversations going and overall just makes for a more interesting league.

So say 5 years of a good prospect at a max of $5mil a year for 1 year of Goldy. That works as an explanation but think you are complicating it. A simpler explanation is that Halfman paid $33.5 to move up 42 picks in the draft. Bums dropped down 42 picks to get Goldy instead of Tex. Both are happy with it and it made sense to them each. While we all have different values of players/picks/cash as long as the teams are acting in their own best interest (based on their own opinion) then a trade should pass. As Gotham said, many times posting a player is on the block will drum up more interest and provide a better return. Sometimes it can work the opposite and lower the value since it seems you want to get rid of them. Just part of the fun figuring out what is the best strategy!
