Hey guys, every year I feel like the biggest issue with this league is the lack of flexibility and being so strongly handcuffed by IL players. Every year we have teams with multiple bench positions being wasted by the need to roster IL guys because we have only 4 IL slots. It’s an issue during the season and it’s an issue in the post season.
Never is an MLB team forced to play a game or a week or a month short handed, why do we do it here?
Am I alone on this or are any of you in agreement that maybe there’s a better way to do this?
A couple options off the top of my head to at least give some more flexibility are:
1. Adding IL spots either 1-2 or 10, I don’t think there should be a limit but that’s me.
2. Allowing players who are out for the year to be placed in reserve where they are dropped from your yahoo roster but they are yours and you can add a player for them. The salary still counts against your salary cap but just get those guys like Woodruff, Alcantara and other TJ guys off the active roster.
3. Allowing the same idea as #2 for guys who are on 60 day IL. Get these guys who are out for long periods of time off the roster if you are at your 4 player max.
Those last 2 ideas are things that we do in other leagues I’m in (other leagues that also already have far more IL slots) and they work well.
The feel like this is an issue that really needs to be addressed. I don’t have an IL issue right now but I bet others do and I’m 100% certain several will through the year and in the playoffs because it happens every year.

I'm open to the idea of adding a couple more ILR slots. In fact, I'd probably be in favor of it. It seems like teams are using the IL a lot more the last couple of years. So we should probably follow suit.
If there is enough support, then we can put it to a vote. But due to most teams having planned their budget around just the 4 ILR slots this year, I think it would be too late to implement this year. But if there is a unanimous support for that, I'm not opposed to doing it this year.
Any more discussion on this idea? 1 person isn't enough for me to go through the vote process. I want to hear what others thoughts are 1st.

Agree 100%. In a league like this, especially as we have entered a time of extreme IL usage in the real bigs, limiting IL to 4 is beyond my current comprehension.
At the same time, rules that exist are typically in place, generally spraking, for a set of good and/or historical reasons. So my comments are just that and likely spoken from a place of ignorance, as I am still new to this league and have not attempted to study its origins or evolution.
Thanks for the post Mini.

in a league I co-run we increased the number of IL spots to 10 because of the pandemic
then kept it there because injuries have been increasing a lot the last few years

My concern revolves around FA availability with expanded IL slots.
The reason MLB clubs can do it is they have multiple minor league teams to pull from whereas some of our owners have little to no minor league roster. If we expand the IL beyond the 5 (4 IL + 1 NA) what are you going to find on the FA wire?
The next domino from the lack of FA depth because owner activity. What auctions are ever going to be started during the season if everyone has 5-10 ILR players on their roster? Anyone of any value would be snatched immediately as an ILR replacement for $.50 (other than a rookie who had the auction started within 24 hours of his first ab/ip)... not a lot.
That said, I do not disagree with the premise.
To me in order to solve for the problem you have to include a solution around the long term ILR. Too many season long ILR guys on rosters who never see the light of day for auction availability.
Perhaps the solution is a phased approach marrying the number of IL slots and the ILR length together? Rule = ILRs can only be rostered for x number of days UNLESS they are from your own minor league system which is unlimited
When I say phased approach - We can make the x days whatever everyone feels comfortable doing and change the number each year for the next few years. Year 1 - it is 45 days because some teams have little to no minor league team so it is unfair to them Year 2 - it is 30 days as everyone has had notice as to the changes coming to ILR and should be planning their minor league roster Year 3 - it is 15 days and stays there on a move forward basis
At the same time you increase the # of IL slots each year for teams in conjunction with the changes to the ILR duration.
In the end what you have done is created MORE value to each team's minor league roster and the importance of the minor league draft. While also addressing Mini's concern around the number of IL slots.
Even if everyone likes the approach, the biggest hurdle will be managing it. How we do time track the duration of ILRs?
Anyway..... while I do not disagree with the number if IL slot issue, I think without addressing the long term ILRs we are just shifting 1 problem for another.

Thinking about this, perhaps another option?
Roster size of 40 and zero DLR or NAR slots... do away with ILR entirely?
Then every manager would have their equivalent of a MLB minor league squad in the extra 14 players (40 vs current 26 player roster size).
The increased roster size would impact the FA pool BUT since there would be no ILR/NARs then every player would require an auction rather than the quickest person snagging them as a long term ILR.
Players on our current minor league roster could only be added to the 40 man active roster by being called up and contracted. That would also eliminate the "free year" where I buy an injured "out for the season player" and ILR my minor leaguer for the full year without it costing a year of control.
Would eliminate the ILR time tracking issue I mentioned above.
Now the challenge is to revise the underlying league structure to move from 26 to 40 players (overall annual salary to spend, number of contracts for each contract length, others?) as well as a fair way of expanding as each owner has built their team/strategy differently.
Anyway..... just food for thought!

Appreciate all the ideas but my first thought is that these are actually different issues. Changing the entire structure of the league by expanding the rosters by over 50% to fix a simple issue seems like a huge thing in relation to adding a couple IL slots to better reflect the number of injuries we have these days.
I’d like to keep my simple idea separate from a league restructure plan.
It’s obvious to everyone that we have a higher percentage of players on the IL than in the past so it’s reasonable to expand the number of IL slots so we aren’t playing short handed.

understood on simplicity. On the singular issue (raising # of IL slots) I would be against based on 1) reduced FA pool 2) the follow on potential decrease in team activity on FAs and 3) more long term ILR players whether they "free" year from our minor roster, or just MLB players used as ILRs for an entire season.
Just my 2 cents... obviously follow whatever the league wants to vote in.

I decided to take a look at the current state of IL/NA usage in the league. What I found is that out of 16 teams, 6 have exceeded the allotment of 5 players on IL or NA. The teams that exceeded were the following:
Sliders - 6 on IL (including 1 IL-60), 1 NA Giants - 6 on IL (including 2 IL-60) Pilots - 8 on IL (including 3 IL-60) Gashouse - 3 on IL (including 2 IL-60), 3 NA Halfman - 3 on IL, 4 NA Stones - 7 on IL (including 2 IL-60), 2 NA
Three things come to mind that can alleviate most of the outlying issues: 1. Allow IL-60 players to be demoted to their milb squad. Opens a roster spot and creates cap that can then be used to auction a replacement player. Once IL-60 player is activated, club would need to have the roster space to add them back, or create a roster spot to accommodate. 2. Allow ILR/NAR spots to be used for any designation. Right now, 4 are assigned IL and only 1 is allowed for NA. Allowing to mix and match will solve some of the issues that several teams have with excess NA players. 3. Increase the total number of ILR/NAR slots to 6 from the current 5.
I think these are fairly easy to implement and would likely solve most, if not all, IL/NA situations for teams.

Alright, since there is no more discussion on this topic, I am going to go ahead and put it to a vote. For whatever reason, injuries seem to keep piling up this year. So I think this is a serious enough topic for consideration of an immediate reaction. On a related note. This exact same vote was put up in the sister league and it passed overwhelmingly! That's not saying both leagues have to be the same. It's just a reference I thought I'd add. Please take a few minutes of your time over the next couple days and read the above discussion and then please place your vote. I don't want to get too complicated with changes this year. I want to keep it simple. But feel free to continue the discussion for further changes in the future to make these rules better. Here is the link to the vote: thegmclub.freeforums.net/thread/5123/increase-il-slots-vote-2024

Nate, just to be clear...the $0 cost for the two additional ILR slots only applies if you've used up your current 4 slots, right? In other words, any ILR's added up to 4, still cost $1?

The 1st 4 ILR slots and the NAR slot will still cost $1 like before. Nothing changes there. The 5th & 6th ILR slot (if needed) will cost $0. This year only!
